Employer Program Leads Mother of Four to New NHA CCMA Career

Written by National Healthcareer Association | September 2025

A recent case study from the Healthcare Workforce Coalition showcases the story of Ana Vazquez and her journey from Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) to NHA Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA).

Founded in part by Ascend Learning and NHA, the Healthcare Workforce Coalition is advocating for policies to help grow our healthcare workforce and promote opportunities for skills growth for providers like Ana.

After working as a CNA for almost twenty years, Ana jumped at the opportunity to pursue her CCMA through a program provided by her employer, Tennessee Oncology. As a mother of four, Ana was able to complete her CCMA while also continuing to work full-time and provide for her family.

Twenty-two percent of surveyed nurses cite a lack of professional growth and advancement as a top factor for leaving the healthcare field. To improve retention, policymakers should pass legislation supporting allied health training and certification programs to create opportunities for career advancement for existing healthcare professionals, like Ana.
