How you can help prevent drug addiction and overdose deaths on Oct. 27

Written by Jessica Langley | October 2018

Do you have unused prescription medicine lingering in your medicine cabinet? Most of us do, but what we don’t realize is that too often, unused prescription drugs find their way into the wrong hands. That's dangerous and often tragic. That's why it was great to see thousands of folks from across the country clean out their medicine cabinets on National Prescription Drug Take Back Day and turn in — safely and anonymously — a record amount of prescription drugs last year.

The opportunity to do the right thing is here again! National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is Saturday October 27, and addresses a crucial public safety and public health issue.

According to the 2016 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 6.2 million Americans misused controlled prescription drugs. The study shows that a majority of abused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends, often from the home medicine cabinet.

We encourage you to take part. Check your medicine cabinet, find a participating location near you and take back your old prescriptions. To learn more, watch the video below and check out the National Drug Enforcement Agencies Prescription Drug Take Back Day website to find locations near you.
