Ohio Expands Pharmacy Technician Scope of Practice

The Ohio Board of Pharmacy has enacted a change that allows a certified pharmacy technician under the direct supervision of a pharmacy to administer clinical laboratory improvement amendments (CLIA) waived diagnostic laboratory testing.

In order for technician to perform these expanded duties the pharmacy must be a certified as a clinical laboratory by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), obtain a CLIA certificate waiver from HSS and all certified pharmacy technicians conducting CLIA waived test must receive appropriate training to conduct testing in a safe and effective manner.
