The State of Ohio Board of Pharmacy recently updated its rules regarding pharmacy technicians. Ohio will recognize three types of technician registrations: certified, registered, and pharmacy technician trainees. Per Ohio law, all pharmacy technicians practicing in Ohio must be registered with the Board by April 6, 2018. The Board has begun accepting pharmacy technician registration applications and recommends that techs should submit their applications well before April 6.
Pharmacy technicians currently working in Ohio are referred to as “qualified technicians." After April 6, 2018, qualified technicians must be registered, either as a Registered Pharmacy Technician or Certified Technician.
A Certified Technician must meet the following requirements:
It should also be noted that effective April 6, 2019, there will be new training requirements for employer based programs. On this effective date, the Board will also accept non-employer based training programs that have been accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists/Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education. Unaccredited non-employer programs will not be accepted for registration as a registered or certified pharmacy technician.
