FAQ About COVID-19

Here are some answers to your most Frequently Asked Questions

Taking Certification Exams and Live Remote Proctoring

How can my candidates test when testing centers are closed?

NHA is excited to offer live remote proctoring (LRP) as a testing option for your candidates, allowing them to securely take NHA’s eight nationally accredited certification exams remotely from their homes.

With LRP, you can provide your candidates a safe, socially distanced testing option under the secure virtual supervision of a third party live remote proctor—provided by our partner, PSI—relieving your institution of the burden of proctoring or needing to wait for testing centers to re-open.

  • If you haven’t already done so, please reach out to your NHA Certification Specialist to have your account set up for LRP as a testing modality, to ensure your candidates can leverage LRP testing. This must be completed at least 48 hours before your candidates can begin registering for and/or scheduling their exam(s).
  • If you are not yet partnered with NHA and would like to utilize LRP for NHA exams, please complete the How To Get Started form on our website and we will be in contact with you to help you get set up based on your institution’s needs.
  • Our third party testing center partner, PSI, has sites that are open, and they will continue operating meeting social distancing and health and safety requirements.
  • Check your NHA account for the most up-to-date, accurate list of available testing centers.
  • PSI has provided a frequently asked questions document regarding the safety and sanitation procedures that will be employed to ensure all candidates and test center administrators are safe. The document can be found here.

What is live remote proctoring?

Live remote proctoring is when a proctor actively watches a candidate throughout their exam with the use of an online connection and web camera. The tester can be located anywhere they have a secure internet connection and a web camera.

Is live remote proctoring available for all exams, including ExCPT?

Yes, NHA’s accrediting body, National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA), has accepted our application and is granting approval for NHA to offer live remote proctoring (LRP) as a testing option for all eight of our nationally accredited certification exams, including ExCPT.

Will LRP be an additional cost?

NHA is currently waiving fees associated with LRP to help during these unprecedented times.

Can our proctors participate in LRP?

No, LRP is only able to be delivered through secure third party vendors such as PSI, who are trained, certified and enabled with special technology (AI, facial recognition/tracking, etc.) to be able to securely monitor exams remotely. School personnel will not be required or allowed to proctor LRP exams and should not engage in any form of remote proctoring exam set up for institution onsite testing.

Will LRP continue to be available after the COVID-19 pandemic has passed?

NHA continually evaluates the ever-changing COVID-19 situation with our schools and testing sites, remaining in close contact with our partners to provide needed resources and ensure testing best practices. Our desire is that all students have the ability to sit for their certification exams.

Can my students take their exam elsewhere if my school remains closed?

LRP is currently an available testing option for your candidates, allowing them to securely take NHA’s eight nationally accredited certification exams remotely from their homes.

With LRP, you can provide your candidates a safe, socially-distanced testing option under the secure virtual supervision of a third party live remote proctor—provided by our partner, PSI—relieving your institution of the burden of proctoring or needing to wait for testing centers to reopen.

  • Our third-party testing center partner, PSI, has sites that are open, and they will continue operating meeting social distancing and health and safety requirements.
  • Check your NHA account for the most up-to-date, accurate list of available testing centers.
  • PSI has provided a frequently asked questions document regarding the safety and sanitation procedures that will be employed to ensure all candidates and test center administrators are safe. The document can be found here.

Providing you with your exam results is our highest priority at NHA. As always, candidates sitting for an online exam will receive results within 1-2 business days. An email will be sent when results are posted to your account.

Exam Eligibility and Externship Requirements

Will conditional CET and CPT certifications be verifiable by employers on the NHA website?
Employers can verify conditional certifications by contacting NHA’s Client Care Team at 800-499-9092
Will NHA make any changes around live stick requirements for phlebotomy candidates or live EKG requirements?

NHA has continued to evaluate the ongoing circumstances resulting from COVID-19 that may prevent access to hands-on practice and externship requirements for Medical Assisting, Phlebotomy and EKG candidates. To serve our candidates’ best interests, we are extending the eligibility deadline an additional 90 days, allowing a total of 180 days (from date of passing the exam) for candidates to complete the requirements.

Once candidates complete these requirements, they will need to provide proof of completion to their organization/school. When the school receives proof of completion from the candidate, the school should contact NHA and we will release the candidate’s certificate and ensure employers can verify the candidate as an active certificate holder.

Read our full statement here.

For Exam Candidates:

Please ensure you complete eligibility and/or externship requirements based on the exam(s) you challenged, within 180 days of your NHA test date. This is not only a requirement for certification but also an important aspect of preparing for your future career. See below for additional details regarding Phlebotomy and EKG requirements:

  1. Phlebotomy Technician Certification (CPT): Each candidate for the CPT certification must be able to provide evidence that he/she has successfully performed a minimum of thirty (30) venipunctures and ten (10) capillary sticks on live individuals.
  2. EKG Technician Certification (CET): Each candidate for the CET certification must be able to provide evidence that he/she has successfully performed a minimum of ten (10) EKGs on live individuals

At the time you provide proof of completion to your school (within 180 days from your test date), your school will contact NHA to release your certificate. This will ensure employers can verify your active certification. Please remember this is a 2-year credential beginning on the day you passed the exam.

NHA’s Certification Governing Board has responsibility and oversight of all certification and recertification requirements and eligibility standards deemed critical to achieving the credential. At this time, the Board is not considering alternative means of demonstrating these live requirements (e.g. waiving or reducing the quantity performed and/or allowing the use of simulation).

Demonstration of these additional eligibility requirements is an important aspect of a high-quality national certification—the type of certification schools and candidates deserve. Additionally, employers have the expectation that candidates with these credentials will enter the job qualified and ready to perform these skills. We will continue to monitor the evolving situation and will communicate any updates here.

Will NHA make any changes regarding candidates being able to test prior to externship?
NHA has taken steps to account for this possibility. Please reference the “Pre-Externship Route to Certification” on page 7 in the Candidate Handbook here.
How does my organization set up “Pre-Externship Route”?
Please contact your certification specialist to complete the necessary form needed for approval. After approval, a member of the NHA team will schedule time to walk you through the process.
Can candidates sit for NHA’s CCMA exam without completing clinical hours or externships?
At this time, NHA does not have an eligibility requirement regarding externships or clinicals for CCMA candidates. As long at the candidates meet NHA’s eligibility requirements, they will be eligible to test. For more information regarding eligibility, please reference NHA’s “Candidate Handbook” at https://www.nhanow.com/docs/default-source/pdfs/handbooks/candidate_handbook.pdf?sfvrsn=26c88273_52
