Transforming the Patient Experience through Health Coaching

Written by Jessica Langley | Oct 2, 2019 3:21:31 PM

Most organizations are taking new and alternative approaches to address overwhelmed practitioners and frustrated patients who suffer from chronic conditions. A new model of healthcare being introduced into primary care practices uses a team-based approach and relies widely on health coaches to support the patient and the provider. Health coaches offer support and guidance to the patient transforming their experience and overall wellness.

In this video presentation, Jessica Langley, Executive Director of Education and Advocacy for NHA, discusses the benefits of health coaching, as well as opportunities for MAs to expand their role, by offering the provider a greater level of support, while working alongside patients and families to become more proactive in their healthcare.

What do you hope certificants get out of this presentation?

Langley: One of the key components of the team-based care philosophy is that it champions patients’ needs and empowers all members of the care team to work at the top of their license and, ultimately, improve patient outcomes. But true reform hinges on creating a culture that is focused on patient self-motivation, behavioral and inspirational support received from qualified healthcare professionals – a health coach. This session will look at the increased need for support staff, such a health coaches, and how the relationship formed between patients and their coaches has the power to completely transform the overall patient experience.

What exactly is health coaching?

Langley: A health coach does not manage patient actions but rather focuses on facilitating change. Health coaches can support the provider and the patient by maintaining engagement with a patient who has a chronic condition. They can help bridge the gap between the goals a provider has for the patient and what the patient wants, and to help the patient understand how to achieve the goals. They help create sustainable behavior changes and offer support and options for the patient to use to incorporate positive changes towards better health.

What members of the healthcare team can benefit most from health coach training?

Langley: Most members of the health care team can benefit from understanding the motivational techniques of health coaching when communicating with any and all patients. Patient and families benefit from having a healthcare advocate, provider and staff benefit by having a dedicated person assigned to patients to increase communication and engagement and lastly the healthcare organization and payers benefit because healthy lifestyle goals are being met which reduces overall healthcare costs.

How can be patients benefit from health coaching services and what types of patients are most likely to benefit from these services?

Yankle: All patients benefit, the ones who are currently healthy will remain that way longer as they become more engaged in developing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle and the patients who experience chronic health problems may get back on track with their health or at least me more proactive in their care.
