Novant Health, acknowledged their staffing shortages in medical groups, exacerbated by the pandemic and a decline in medical assistant program enrollees. To combat this, they initiated a career pathways program that introduced a pre-medical assisting role in thier facilities. This is aimed to expand the pool of candidates by offering accelerated training and certification to allied health professionals, current employees, and select new hires. To do this they began investing in training to improve retention, as reported by the National Healthcareer Association. With a high pass rate for the NHA's Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) certification and positive feedback from healthcare professionals, the pilot program has shown promising results in addressing medical assistant turnover and retention challenges at Novant Health.
