Why I left the 2019 PCMH Congress refreshed about patient-centered care

A few short weeks ago I was able to attend the 2019 Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) Congress in Boston, MA as a representative of NHA. High-quality credentialing solutions and our expertise in allied health is something that I’m very proud of as a director of educational and employer partnerships. However, we want organizations to see us as something more than that. We are at the forefront of helping to reshape healthcare through developing, advancing and advocating for the frontline healthcare worker, with the goal of improving patient care.

My co-workers and I had conversations with practice managers, nursing professionals, thought-leaders in population health management, health IT professionals and more. We are all laser-focused on helping each other transform care and provide a positive impact in communities across the country. The goals of the PCMH Congress strongly align with NHA’s mission. At NHA we empower people to access a better future, much like health care providers strive to build better relationships between care teams and patients. Together we are all advocating for patients while searching for solutions to reduce care costs. As a healthcare consumer, this sounds like a better future in healthcare to me!

NHA specializes in providing our partners with the resources they need to help expand roles and impact  allied health. Would you like to unite your entire care team and improve their communication during team huddles and patient hand-offs? We can help you. How about finding efficiencies in your workflows? Do you need help optimizing workloads and delegating work down to the most appropriate team member based on the specific tasks they were trained to do? We can help with that too.

It is clear, value-based care is not a fad and everyone has a vested interest in the long-term success of new healthcare initiatives.

These key insights from the show reinforced that NHA is evolving to meet the market:

  • A 2018 Deloitte study revealed that 36% of physicians said that one daily duty that could be done more efficiently was documentation related tasks.
    • At NHA we place high importance in offering nationally recognized credentials for clinical practice, but also in front office roles like, medical administrative assistants, billing and coding specialists and electronic health records, too.
  • There are many barriers to implementing a PCMH care delivery model, such as the cost of support staff, social workers, RNs, patient navigators, etc., as well as integrating multidisciplinary teams, and developing care plans and self-management goals that travel with the patient.
    • NHA is continually evaluating market needs and keeps closely connected to those in the field so we can develop solutions to help fill the gap in care. Some of our latest solutions include TEAM Based Care and Principles of Health Coaching.
  • The patient experience matters, and Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS) scores matter too. As an institution, you must capture patient feedback and be prepared to take action.
    • By investing in your staff, they will be more committed to to their jobs with higher levels of job satisfaction, which can translate into delivering better care. That is why we are reaching beyond allied health to bring care teams together with shared learning experiences.

I returned from Boston refreshed and hopeful that we are moving healthcare in the right direction. I also felt assured that there are organizations who truly seek to put the patient first. After all, the sole purpose of this collaboration is to find better ways to care for those with chronic illness, to keep healthy people healthy longer and improve quality for everyone. Who doesn’t want to be a part of such amazing and impactful collaborative aspirations?
