Updates on ICD-10 and Certified Billing and Coding Specialist (CBCS) Exam Content

Written by Jeremy Sasser | September 2015

NHA has diligently monitored the progress and updates with regard to the transition to ICD-10 occurring October 1, 2015.  NHA is committed to providing up-to-date assessments reflecting current practice. To achieve this goal with regard to ICD-10, NHA has collected data and reviewed the quality of exam questions related to the new ICD-10 standards. After October 1, 2015, questions meeting the review standards will be released for use on the Certified Billing and Coding Specialist (CBCS) exam, ensuring that candidates are assessed on their understanding of ICD-10.

The CBCS test plan and study materials will not be affected, as ICD-10 is appropriately covered in current content.

Changes to the Certification Renewal Process for CBCS Certificate Holders

Certificants who passed the NHA CBCS exam prior to October 1, 2015 must complete a minimum of 5 of their 10 required Continuing Education (CE) credits in an ICD-10 specific related course(s). This requirement only applies at the certificant’s first renewal date. At all subsequent renewals, CBCS certificants will follow the standard NHA CE requirements in effect at the time of renewal.
